YOUNG AT LONG LAST GOING DOWNSTATE
This was the scene in the Whitney Young locker room after their 62-47 defeat of Hyde Park. They and coach Tyrone Slaughter win the Chicago State Super-Sectional and venture to Peoria for the state 4A finals. However, from a personal standpoint, we are so proud of both these Chicago teams. Hyde Park...you guys are tops and see ya next year! Coach Kirksey what a class act congratulating Young in their locker room. But Young--This is your year and you know it. Your seniors just cannot graduate without a state title. Make it so.

MARSHALL (REMEMBER THEM) BEGIN THEIR QUEST OF REPEATING AS STATE CHAMPS
Above Darius Smith glides in for a couple of his 27 points in Marshalls 79-46 win over Manley. Marshall, after yet another long layoff, began the process of defending their 3A crown by dominating at their own regional. Look for a match-up against Crane Thursday or Friday for the title game here. Marshall also got contributions from transfer Alfonzo McKinnie and survived yet another Eriq Harris injury scare.

East-West head coach Michael Lang offers his thoughts on his teams succesful 2008-2009 season. Lang has enjoyed success the last 3 seasons at this downtown Chicago school.
![]() The season is over and EWU Men's Basketball Team finished 12-12. This is the third straight winning season. This record is better than Purdue, North Central, Calumet College, Purdue-Calumet University, I.I.T., Trinity International, St. Francis, ONU and IU South Bend who are all apart of the Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).
The team had balance scoring lead by Jamar Thomas 17.2 a game; Levese Jones 16.3 ppg 5.3 assists (Co-MVP on the team). As well Leo Baylor averaged nearly 14 ppg and 5.3 assists and was our other Co-MVP. Evin McCrimon averaged 14.9 ppg as well as 9 assists per game and blocked 26 shots this season. Freshman Antoine Peterson 8.8ppg, Emmanuel Crokett 10.3 a game, Abel Collozo averaging 6.8 a game including 19 points against Taylor University Fort Wayne. Peterson was EWU's best defensive player. Marlon Johnson averaged 8.7 a game and provided leadership for a young team. Brett King and Johnny Brooks provide long-range shooting for the Phantoms. King shot 44.2 from 3 point area while averaging 6.1 a game. Brooks was our best clutch shooter on the team. Johnny hit some big shots this year against P.V.C Algoma, I.I.T, and TUFW.
I am really proud of my team with more help we can do even better...Michael Lang

One day we just have to measure the vertical of Kyle Cain (above) of Thornton. Until than we watched a #1 ranked Thornton team do what they are suppose to do in tight, meaningful games--pull away late and take total control. They did just that is a 53-38 SICA East showdown victory over TF North.

BLUE-WEST B-BALL..COLLINS OVER BEST PRACTICE
Collins Jerome Harris(l) in 86-74 victory vs. Best Practice
They still play in conditions like this--the court at Best Practice (located in the shadow of the United Center) is about 3/4th the size of an actual regulation court...maybe ; there's no scoreboard so time is kept on a hand held hour timer and the score is kept on flip cards! Ridiculous in 2009. CPL get these guys at least a scoreboard even if it's a small used one. Also if you cant do nothing about the gym move the games to a place with a real gym. Now back to the game...Jerome Harris led Collins with 20 points and Best Practice's Demond Jones also hit for 20 to lead his team.

MORTONS HOT SHOOTING DOES IN WEARY YOUNG
Luke Scarlata slams in an exclamation point slam dunk late in Mortons defeat of Whitney Young at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament Monday in Hillside. 47% FG and 40% 3-Pt percentages owned by Morton was a main reason that did in Young. Also most of Youngs team, including the head coach (who sprinted by us near the parking lot arriving 10 minutes before tip-off) seemed to have to find their own means of transportation at the last second. No excuses though as a very good Morton team won.

MARSHALL DOES IN CLARK IN RED-WEST OPENER
VINCENT GARRETT ON THE SLAM
Notice a trend when we present Marshall photos? Well we include LOTS of images of these guys on defense. Why not as that is where their game excels. These are athletes who get after a man who has the ball like no other team around; there is no let down even when the second string comes in! That's what took place Wednesday in the Commandos 30 point route of Clark.

Christian Wall hit for 14 points and the teams leading over-all scorer through the season so far, David Holston put in 11points. Tawrence Walton and Mike Wilson also scored 11 points. Under the leadership of new head coach Benjy Taylor, the Cougars now play with a sense of confidence. Their game is serious up-tempo all the time; the offensive sets are geared for sharp passing, smart shot-taking and penetrating the paint with a gusto and defensively these guys are getting in your face with a full court press nearly all the time.
