HEAD COACH MICHAEL LANG AND THE GUYS FROM EAST-WEST
East-West University is a small college swallowed up in the south loop of Chicago. Although hard to find (816 S. Michigan to be exact; look for the sign on the front of a massive skyscraper) the vibrant atmosphere of downtown Chicago contributes to the excitement of this upstart and upbeat program. Led by a hungry and principled young coach and a group of fierce and talented ballers, look for this program to make important inroads into the Chicago college landscape. We will follow this team throughout 2006-2007; much more to come!

Every so often we will stumble across some of the Chicago area's elite players while covering an event. That was the case Saturday (5/27/06) at the Othell Mitchell Pro-Am at Kennedy-King College. Hales Franciscan and future University of California stand-out Jerome Randle had all his finest skills on display in the stuffy old gym of KKC.

MARSHALL AND BRYANT GOING DOWNSTATE
We go back with Lamont Bryant many years when he was head coach at Whitney Young. No trips downstate for him to Peoria with some very good teams he had there, but now it's different. He and some very talented players on the court and even more classy off of it are in the Elite Eight! They defeated Loyola Academy to reach the promised land.

The Thornwood Thunderbirds go crazy after winning the U.I.C. Super-Sectional(1) after 3 overtimes over Homewood-Flossmoor 40-38. That's EIGHT overtimes played in the last 2 games for Thornwood; what a job they did to handle the pressure and come out on top!

5 O.T. CLASSIC AT EISENHOWER
TOTAL HEARTBREAK FOR MINUTEMEN
THORNWOOD 53 - WASHINGTON 52
Mario Little is consoled by his fellow players after a game that will be talked about for years. Thornwood won 53-52 and advances to the U.I.C. Super-Sectional against H.F. As for Washington , a splendid season comes to a vicious end. Twice in the 5 overtimes, shots at the buzzer that could of won it for them hit rim and fell aside. They had two 4 point leads in the second O.T. and still had to have a Thornwood buzzer-beater drop in to tie the game. To Ken Crump(head coach) and Thomas Dobson(assistant) and your wonderful young men: This tournament will be a lot less richer without you in it.

SIMEON WINS CHICAGO TITLE
Derrick Rose preens and struts along with Randall Hampton after the second of his memorable dunks Saturday against Washington. Just when we thought Jon Scheyer's Proviso West performance could not be topped, Rose came close...oh so close. Simeon rules as the 2006 Chicago Public League Champs!
As electrifying as Derrick Rose's dunks were at the Chicago Public League title game, also as well was his reaction afterwards. A Simeon player actually showing raw spontaneous emotion! Coaches there past and present frown on their players displaying themselves as normal young men having the time of their lives in the prime of their lives, then telling anyone about it. When your Rose, thankfully it seems restrictions are relaxed a bit.

![]() That's Jeremiah Wise on the left and Phillip(Mickey)Perry on the right. They play for Proviso East. They lost to Brother Rice by one point Tuesday(3/15) at the UIC Super-Sectional and this photo was taken right after the loss. Perry missed a layup at the buzzer that would of won the game. We've followed the Pirates here for years. We watched and photographed as both Dee and Shannon should of but couldn't make it to the Elite Eight. We congratulate Brother Rice because you've never made it. But we kind of hoped 'East could of got there. Somehow that would of been right.
