EAST-WEST 2010
BAYLOR, MANNING EXCEL AT EAST-WEST
By Michael Kosman
(Chicago, Il.) East-West University will soon say a sad good-bye to four year starter Leo Baylor but will still be enhanced with one more year of service from Cliff Manning. These two players are among the top reasons for the rising success story that is this basketball program at East-West.
Ensnared in an office structure in downtown Chicago, East-West University in the past was not high on any recruits wish list of where to play basketball. With no campus, no dorms, and no home gym to play in things were lean for a long time. Yet with players such as Baylor and Manning, as well as with their dynamic and persevering head coach Michael Lang things are much different now.
Lang’s dedication to this program and to this team are exemplary and it shows in his teams improvements over his four year stretch here. Key to Lang’s accomplishments was having on his bench the slithery 6’3” guard Leo Baylor, who went 78-73 in his four seasons at East-West. He amassed over 1000 points and over 400 rebounds and over 150 steals in that period.  “All this kid’s about is filling up the stat sheet,” Lang said. “He has monster games and just about nothing else.”Among the recent high points for Baylor was a 23-10-8 performance against Davenport and a 14-8-6 output vs. Concordia. Add to that a 19-9-5 game against St. Ambrose and a 20-8-4 yield vs. Andrews University.  Not to be outdone he hit for 17-7-8 against a very talented St. Francis squad.
Junior 6’6” 215lb 2-guard Cliff Manning is that other main reason Lang and East-West continue to strengthen. Described as a “true inspiration” by Lang, the athletic Manning is a player who has proven he can do lots of high-quality things promptly.  In just 28 minutes against Harris Stowe he nailed 26 points. He topped that performance by hitting for 28 points and 14 rebounds in 26 minutes against St. Ambrose.  Manning, with 28 double-double’s to date, has also contributed two buzzer-beating lay-ups for wins.
